Resonance

I was artist-in-residence on the Resonance digital arts programme at The Animation Station, Banbury throughout 2006. This was an opportunity for me to develop my own practice, as well as help to enhance the Animation Station’s work with professional artists and raise its profile within the artistic and wider community. The residency culminated in a solo exhibition at Banbury Museum.

The residency provided me valauble time and space for research and development of my practice. A major focus for the year was the development of my own software art project The Present Time Media Framework as the primary platform for developing future performance and installation work. This software ran both of the installations created for the final exhibition. I am currently redesigning some aspects of the software to make it more flexible, and it is my intention to release it under a free software licence in the near future.

Other key areas of research during the residency were into new ways of using video projection (in particular onto different surfaces), and into ways of introducing interactivity into my work that were intuitive yet not predictable. The results of these areas of research can be seen in Sound Pool and Trees of the Cherwell Vallery created for the final exhibition, and they remain key areas of exploration in my ongoing practice.

Throughout the year, I participated in a number of events aimed at improving networking with the local professional arts community, as well as skills sharing and doing a series of presentations about my work. As a keen user of free open-source software, I helped to make links between the Animations Station and Access Space, Sheffield leading to a Grow Your Own Media Lab at Banbury Museum to coincide with my exhibition.

The exhibition at Banbury Museum was well received by the visiting public, with visitor numbers significantly above average, and numerous visitors making repeat visits. I continue to have a strong relationship with The Animation Station, and have subsequently been asked to join its advisory group.

The residency was financially supported by Arts Council England and Cherwell District Council, and project managed by Victoria Leighton.
