Ley

An outdoor interactive sound installation created for the sculpture trail of the Ley Community - a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in North Oxfordshire. The work was created in collaboration with residents of the community.

The challenge of this work was to create an experience that complements the relaxing nature of the garden, as well as offering the opportunity for fun interaction in a way that reflects the essential role of laughter within the community. At the core of this work is a continuously changing soundscape composed of recordings made by residents, in particular of sounds that regularly intrude on the garden. These are placed through a series of filters that emphasise particular pitches, and turn once jarring sounds into a pleasant ambiance. Atop of this, movement (or dancing!) within the area of the speakers is picked up by a camera and triggers the addition of percussion and birdsong from around the world – a subtle way of allowing the outside world into the Ley.

The Ley Community sculpture trail of four works was funded by Arts Council England, DLM Charitable Trust and Cherwell District Council.
